The real secret to how to improve your singing or guitar playing isn’t a new video or technique or lengthy practice routine. If you do this ONE thing, you will improve your singing or guitar playing. The one thing is….drum roll please…
BE CONSISTENT.
Not very sexy, huh? Let me explain. Being consistent is building a daily practice habit. And that habit doesn’t mean you need to practice an hour a day or even a half hour a day. What I’m saying is that daily, consistent practice of 10-15 minutes a day will get you farther than setting aside an hour on two days a week for practice and play.
Ten minutes of focused practice a day – that’s it. For vocalists, that means doing a warm up and an exercise or two of your choice (singing songs isn’t as effective as focused practice, but if all you can do is sing Fight Song or whatever tune lifts you up on one of your days, that works just as well, too!). If you are a guitarist, that means picking up your guitar for 10 minutes and focusing on chord changes, memorizing notes, learning a scale, or even just tuning your guitar.
The most important thing you’re doing when you commit to 10 minutes a day is that you’re building a habit. Each day you know you’re going to sing or that instrument will be in your hands.
Ten minutes! We all easily blow 10 minutes on TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, or whatever is your distraction of choice. You can take 10 minutes of each day (remember we have 24 hours to spend) and become a much better singer and proficient guitarist than if you would have spent that time doing something else.
From personal experience, I know this to be true. Years back, I was working a 60-hour a week job unrelated to music. Although I still had time to peruse Facebook (as a lurker) , I thought, “I don’t have time for guitar. It’ll have to wait until I’m ‘less busy.'” But I wanted to play – REALLY BADLY.
So, I made the decision that I would practice for 10-15 minutes 5 days per week (in the morning before I went into the office). And that was one of the best decisions I made as a musician. That job lasted for four years, and in those years, I became a good guitar player on that practice plan.
What if I would have waited to practice until “life slowed down?” I’d be right where I was at the beginning of those four years. Ten minutes a day works. I promise.
So, if you are super busy, but really want to sing or play guitar better – get on the 10 minutes a day plan. And you know what? Those 10 minutes will likely blossom into 15, 20 or 30 minutes.
Guitarists and vocalists in Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Colonie, Latham, Watervliet, Clifton Park, Niskayuna, Cohoes, and surrounding communities – get into the 10-minute practice habit. We guarantee results!
